A letter from
Janice Phillips Abrahamson

MAY is National ALS Awareness Month. I didn't know what ALS was when the doctor
gave me that diagnosis in December, 2000--then he told me it was more
commonly known as Lou Gehrig's disease. I had seen the movie with Gary
Cooper, but still didn't know what the disease was all about. It is a rare
neuromuscular disease where the motor neurons in the brain are attacked and
die, and when they die the signals from the brain to the muscles are not
sent, and so the muscle tissues die also. It affects people differently.
It affected Lou Gehrig in his arms, and it affected my legs first and is
progressing into my arms, and throat and chest muscles. They don't know
what causes this disease and do not have a cure---its a slow death. I was
given three to five years to live--but I plan on being here a lot longer
than that!!! Awareness needs to be raised for this awful disease and I am
trying to help in every way I can. I ask for your prayers for all those
affected and for the 25 dedicated MDA/ALS clinical and research centers in
the U.S.A. More information can be found at www.als.mdausa.org. Thank you
for your support!
