Letter from Dennis Anderson Our class "Don"
Thanks for the invitation; but, we will not be able to attend.
Estelle and I are now living in Madison, Indiana. In March of
2000, my Information Systems job, in Dallas, was
"outsourced" to outside consultants and my job (and
many others) was eliminated. Estelle had already
been operating a small Bookstore business in a suburb of Dallas, and
we had plans on that being our income source in our "declining
years". Well, being over 50 years old and without a job,
our declining years came a lot earlier than we planned. So we
moved the bookstore business to Madison, Indiana, and opened the doors
on July 1st that same year.
Our oldest daughter married a man from Madison, and they had
moved here a few years ago. We really admired this town when we
visited here. It is a small, quiet little town on the Ohio River
half way between Louisville and Cincinnati. It is at least a
thirty minute drive to get to the interstate highway. But it has
133 blocks of Historic District and preserved architecture, so it
draws lots of visitors here for a weekend get-away.
Since moving here, we have increased the size of the business, since
it is the only bookstore in Madison. They have an
"On-Cue" franchise out in a strip shopping, but they are
mostly into music rather than books. Business is improving all
the time, and we expect to be here for a long time to come.
Over the July 4th weekend, they have the Annual Regatta, which is a
boat race on the Ohio River right here in Madison. It attracts
thousands of visitors into our town; so, naturally, we have to be
here. There is a parade down main street, and we are involved in
some of the activities. Watch for the new movie that is coming
out in August called "MADISON". It is based on the
regatta that is held here, and lots of the filming was done right here
in Madison.
We have begun to participate in the community; I serve on the board
for the Madison Main Street Program, which is a non-profit group to
help maintain, preserve and restore the viability of our downtown.
I also serve on the board of Spectrum Productions, the local community
theatre group. I have had parts in several of the plays, and we
are currently in rehearsal for the next one. I don't seem to be
able to memorize as well as I could when I was younger...
I know you know my brother Fred and Linda still live there in
Amarillo, and we were able to visit them this past February. We
made a whirlwind trip back to Texas to visit a little and take care of
some business at the same time. Our youngest daughter, Angela,
and the only grandbaby, Kinsey (age 2 1/2) live in Lubbock, so we only
spent a night with Fred and Linda and had to get on to Lubbock the
next day.
Well, that's the latest on us if anyone is interested. Time
is getting away and we are all getting older. We have all
changed on the outside over the years, and some of us have changed on
the inside, but the memories we carry with us never change.
Ya'll have fun and keep in touch.
